Frequently Asked Questions

  • Somatic Songwriters© is a nervous-system-informed creative platform and community for songwriters, musicians, and artists. We bring the body, voice, and nervous system into the creative process, supporting artists to create, perform, and collaborate from a place of regulation, safety, and authenticity.

Through education, somatic practices, brain-based vocal coaching, and songwriting tools, we explore how nervous system states shape creativity, performance, and connection. Rather than pushing through blocks or focusing solely on productivity, we work with the body to support sustainable creative flow.

At the heart of Somatic Songwriters© is a community. This is a shared space where artists can learn, reflect, and grow together, with an emphasis on co-regulation, mutual respect, and creative integrity.

This work is educational and experiential, designed to support a more grounded, embodied, and connected relationship with creativity, on stage, in the studio, and beyond.

  • Somatic Songwriters© is for:

    • Songwriters, musicians, producers, artist managers, singers.

    • Artists who feel blocked, burned out, anxious, or disconnected from their creativity.

    • Creatives who want a deeper relationship with their body and nervous system.

    • Anyone curious about embodiment, polyvagal theory, and creativity - no prior knowledge required.

You don’t need to be a “professional” musician. If you feel called, you belong here.

  • Nervous system regulation is about restoring balance within the autonomic nervous system (ANS) — the part of your body that controls involuntary functions like heart rate, digestion, and breathing.

It’s the body’s natural ability to shift between different states:

    • Fight or flight (sympathetic activation) when facing challenge or stress,

    • Rest, digest, and create (parasympathetic activation) when feeling safe and supported.

A regulated system allows you to:

    • Respond rather than react to stress

    • Feel grounded, connected, and creative

    • Coordinate inner processes such as hormones, immune response, and emotional expression

    • Adapt fluidly to changes — both internal and external

    • Access intuition and creative flow more easily

Beyond physiology, your nervous system is the bridge between your body, emotions, and creative expression. It’s where presence, intuition, and authentic artistry begin.

  • No.
All practices and teachings are guided in an accessible, gentle way. We explain concepts simply and always invite you to listen to your own pace, capacity, and boundaries. This work meets you where you are.

  • No.
Somatic Songwriters© is educational, experiential, and creative, not therapy or a replacement for mental health care.

While the work can be deeply supportive and regulating, it is not designed to diagnose, treat, or process trauma in a clinical way. We focus on resources, safety, and creative self-connection.

  • Most songwriting spaces focus on the mind: technique, structure, productivity.

Somatic Songwriters© begins with the body.

    We work with:

    • Nervous system states (ventral, sympathetic, dorsal)

    • Regulation as the foundation for creation

    • Co-regulation in collaboration and co-writing

    • Voice and expression as lived, embodied experiences

    • Brain-based, nervous-system-informed vocal coaching

    • Creativity as something that emerges through safety

This is songwriting from the inside out.

Somatic Songwriters© brings the nervous system into the creative process.
Rather than pushing through blocks or chasing performance, we explore how your system shapes the way you write, perform, and connect.

It’s not about fixing you, it’s about creating the conditions for your most authentic voice to unfold, on and off stage.

  • Participants often report:

    • Feeling more grounded and regulated before and during writing

    • Greater emotional access without overwhelm

    • More ease with voice, expression, and performance

    • Less pressure, more trust in the creative process

    • A deeper sense of connection, to self and others

Everyone’s experience is unique, and nothing is forced.

  • Yes, and especially then.

Somatic Songwriters was created for moments when:

    • Writing feels unsafe or overwhelming

    • Your body goes into freeze, fight, or collapse around creativity

    • You feel disconnected from your voice or expression

We work slowly, honoring the three elements of wellbeing: context, choice and connection. We work with your nervous system rather than pushing through it.

  • Yes.
All practices are designed through a trauma- and nervous-system-informed lens inspired by Somatic Experiencing®, Polyvagal Theory, and embodied creativity principles.

    We emphasize:

    • Choice

    • Orientation and grounding

    • Titration (small, manageable steps)

    • Pendulation

    • Respect for individual capacity

  • Somatic Songwriters exists in multiple forms, including:

    • Online courses and resources

    • The Somatic Songwriters App (coming soon)

    • Podcast conversations

    • In-person workshops and retreats

Each offering is designed with the same core values of safety, embodiment, and creative integrity.

  • If you feel a quiet yes, curiosity, resonance, or relief when reading this, that’s often enough.

You don’t need to be ready, healed, or confident.
Just willing to listen to yourself a little more closely.

  • Your nervous system is the foundation of your creative flow.
When it’s dysregulated, your body stays in survival mode, making it harder to access intuition, presence, or playfulness. Regulation reopens those pathways so ideas, melodies, and lyrics can move through freely.

Creativity isn’t just a mental process; it’s a felt one.
Regulation helps you feel safe enough to take emotional risks, the kind that great art requires.

  • Both, the science of Polyvagal Theory, Somatic Psychology, and Neuroscience, combined with body-based awareness and creative integration.
It’s grounded in research yet deeply human, connecting physiology with artistry.

  • Think of it like learning an instrument or a second language.
At first, it takes repetition, curiosity, and patience. You might practice specific exercises, noticing your breath, orienting to safety, feeling your feet on the ground, much like scales or grammar rules.

But over time, it becomes embodied.
You start to “speak” the language of your body fluently. You naturally notice your sensations, regulate your breath before a performance, or reconnect to your body during writing sessions, without needing to think about it.

When your awareness becomes a natural rhythm through the day, it’s no longer practice but it’s who you’ve become.
You’re fluent in regulation. That’s when creativity flows freely again.

  • Beautiful! This will actually deepen what you already do.
While breathwork and meditation are amazing, our programs teach you when and how to use them depending on your nervous system state.
Sometimes slowing down isn’t what your body needs, sometimes it needs activation or grounding through sound and movement. You’ll learn to discern the difference.

  • That’s completely normal.
For many, this information is new and not yet part of mainstream medical or creative education. Nervous system regulation is a bridge between science and embodiment, rooted in neuroscience and trauma theory, yet experienced through direct felt awareness.

You can’t see your nervous system - it lives as electrical impulses, chemical messengers, and muscular responses within you.
But you can feel it: in your breath, tension, energy, and flow.

If something inside you feels drawn to this work, even if your mind has doubts, that inner curiosity is often your system saying yes.
